Sights in Cala Ratjada, Majorca

Cala Ratjada has a lot to offer. If you don't just want to lie on the beach, you should explore the area in and around Cala Ratjada. For example:

The lighthouse

To the lighthouse (El Faro) of Cala Ratjada you should also pay a visit. If you walk along the coast from the port of Cala Ratjada, you will always come across small bathing bays. The path goes over small rocks, between pine trees. Sometimes you come across small wooden doors that lead straight down to the sea. After about ½ hour you come to a quarry, here you can already see the lighthouse. The path is marked with small blue dots on the ground and leads all the way to the lighthouse. Or you can go to the street that is directly from Market place Cala Ratjada out to the lighthouse. The path meanders steadily upwards under pine trees. From here you have a fantastic view. On good days even to the neighboring island of Menorca.

In total it takes around 1 hour (if you walk along the coast) or around 35 minutes (if you walk up the road) to arrive at the lighthouse. It's best to pack a small picnic in your backpack and enjoy it on the way there or directly at the lighthouse and of course don't forget your bath towel, because on the way back you can go to the bay just before the Hotel Cala Gat Cala Gat and enjoy the blue sea and the small beach there. The small Chiringuito, the beach bar in the bay, also offers refreshment.

Of course you can also come to the lighthouse by car or bicycle on the main roads if the hiking is too strenuous for you. Inexperienced cyclists may have to push part of the route as it is constantly uphill.

The harbor

The port connects Cala Ratjada with the world or with Capdepera, because Cala Ratjada is the port of Capdepera. he is with one of the largest fishing ports in Mallorca. Fishing boats go out here and come back with freshly caught fish. It was once in discussion and in planning, and it always comes up again that the Port of Cala Ratjada is to be rebuilt. We are talking about a huge pier for cruise ships, which can then stop not only in Palma but also in Cala Ratjada. In the past, you could also take a smaller ferry from Cala Ratjada to Menorca. However, this was discontinued a few years ago, now you have to cross over to Alcudia and from there to the smaller sister island of Menorca.
The harbor promenade has been modernized in recent years and has become a promenade. Many pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants are located on the promenade and not only offer a beautiful view, but also many national and international dishes. On every 2nd Sunday of the month there is also a flea market in Cala Ratjada, in the street Avinguda de Floreal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Villa March in Cala Ratjada

villa march cala ratjada guide

This stately villa, which towers inconspicuously over Cala Ratjada, is worth a visit with its gardens and sculptures. The March Servera family bought this beautiful finca in 1915, which was then redesigned by the architect Guillem Reynés. A tower belongs to the villa, also called Torre Cega “the blind tower” because it was apparently invisible to other watchtowers and only served as protection for the town of Cala Ratjada. The villa itself consists of three floors and has a square layout. Inside is the patio (inner courtyard), outside a spacious terrace invites you to linger.
In the 1960s and 1970s, after several alterations and renovations of the villa, the gardens as we can see them today, the so-called Gardens of the Blind Tower (Jardines de Sa Torre Cega), which also house over 40 different sculptures.
You can visit the villa and gardens by prior arrangement. In the summer months, various, mostly classical, concerts take place here again and again.

The Arta Caves

They are also absolutely worth seeing Arta Caves or Canyamel. Especially in the afternoons, for example in the summer months for the last tour at 6 p.m., you are almost alone, the tour operators are no longer on site and you can enjoy the tour almost privately. The tours are held in different languages, also in German.

The caves are on the coast, just follow the signs “Coves d'Artà” towards Canyamel.
These caves impress with the beauty and variety of stalagmites that shoot up from the ground to the cave ceiling. Sometimes stalactites hanging from the ceiling seem to unite with stalagmites, a process that has lasted for many millennia, the results of which show us these unique formations and structures. Here is also one of the longest stalagmites in the world, with a height of 22 meters. The caves are only about 15 minutes drive from Cala Ratjada.

Church in Cala Ratjada, Parroquia de Nuestra Senora del Carmen

In the street Calle Isaac Peral, s/n, in the center of Cala Ratjada, a German-language service takes place every Sunday at 11 a.m. in the small parish church. Since the church does not have a house number, here is a brief description of how to get there. You drive from the center of Cala Ratjada, always straight ahead along Calle d'Elionor Servera, past the market square (market square on the left, the port on the right), then take the 4th street on the left into Carrer de l'Algulla. Then after about 70 m on the left is the church.

Auditorium and Art Exhibition Center Cap Vermell

In the auditorium and art exhibition center of Cala Ratjada, Cap Vermell, various concerts such as flamenco, zarzuelas, jazz, etc. are held throughout the year. You can also enjoy various dance performances, photo and painting exhibitions.

Talayot "Es Claper des Gegants"

There is another talayot just a 10 minute drive away in Canyamel. This stone village was built over 3000 years ago, an important prehistoric witness. Formed by different stone constructions, round, oval and rectangular "rooms" protected by a wall with different passages.
