The castle towers sublimely on the almost 160 meter high Puig de Capdepera mountain over the "small" village of Capdepera, which has around 3,300 inhabitants. The municipality itself consists of several villages and localities, such as Canyamel, Cala Ratjada, Font de sa Cala, etc. and now has a total of 11,000 inhabitants. The castle was built as a protective fortress in the 14th century by King Jaume II to protect against pirate attacks. The castle is still in fantastic condition today and is considered one of the best-preserved castles in Mallorca.

Every year, on the third weekend in May, Capdepera hosts the medieval market instead of. At the market you can try many different country and island specialties and also different types of beer from many small local breweries, such as the island beer Cerveza Tramuntana. At the castle itself, during the medieval market, you can see various birds of prey that are displayed there on the occasion of the medieval market.
